David & Barbara Cohen Journalism Scholarship

Established April 2025

Purpose: The David & Barbara Cohen Family Foundation aims to support the next generation of journalists and media professionals in California’s North Bay region. Through The Press Democrat Journalism Trust, the foundation offers scholarships to help students achieve academic and professional excellence in their field.

Scholarship: The David & Barbara Cohen Journalism Scholarship awards one journalism student from the North Bay a one-time scholarship of $2,500. This annual spring scholarship runs concurrently with The Norma & Evert Person Journalism Scholarship, giving students the opportunity to receive one or both awards. Students need to submit only a single application form (linked below).

The scholarships will be awarded by The Press Democrat Journalism Trust and the David & Barbara Cohen Family Foundation based on the scholarship’s purpose, student eligibility and recommendations from the scholarship review panel.

Eligibility

• Must be a graduate of a high school in Sonoma, Napa, Lake or Mendocino counties
• Must be attending or planning to attend a junior college or four-year college or university AND enrolled in the upcoming semester prior to receiving the scholarship
• Preferred area of study: Journalism. Related areas of study will be considered, including but not limited to: communications, photojournalism, English and writing with an interest in news, media or journalism
• Past recipients who remain eligible are encouraged to apply
