Norma & Evert Persons' Journalism Scholarship

Established November 2020

Purpose:  Foster the next generation of journalists and media professionals in California’s North Bay region by offering scholarships and guidance that help cultivate their academic and professional excellence in the field.

Scholarships: The Press Democrat Journalism Trust is excited to provide the Norma & Evert Persons’ Journalism scholarship, which provides support for aspiring journalism students. Two scholarships of up to $2,500 each will be awarded annually and are renewable for four years based on continued eligibility.  Importantly, the scholarship also pairs recipients with a professional mentor to guide them through the process of becoming a journalist and will assist the recipient in securing a paid summer internship with The Press Democrat or a partnering publication. The Press Democrat Journalism Trust, the administrator of the scholarship, will award these scholarships following the scholarship’s purpose, student eligibility, and recommendations of the scholarship committee.


  • Graduate of a Sonoma, Napa, Lake, or Mendocino County high school.
  • Attending/planning to attend either a junior college or 4-year college or university AND enrolled in the upcoming semester prior to receiving the scholarship.
  • Area of study: Journalism preferred but related areas of study will be considered, including (but not limited to): Communications, Photojournalism, English/Language, and Writing (must have an interest in news/media/journalism).
  • Must agree to work with a mentor from Sonoma Media Investments.
  • Agree to provide twice-yearly updates on academic progress, including courses taken and GPA.
  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and pass 9 units per semester.
